Making sure they fit
Hi – I’m doing a DIY built-in cabinet/bookshelf, and am ordering cabinets to fit between two walls, with a window in the middle. Is there a rule of thumb around ordering a certain fraction smaller than the exact measurement of the width, to be sure the cabinets fit? Or if I have a 50″ space, do you recommend ordering cabinets that add up to exactly 50″?

When installing cabinets between two walls, you really need a transition filler, typically 2″ wide, on each side where the cabinet meets the wall.
Walls are notoriously out of square and out of plumb. Without a filler, the cabinet-to-wall transition can look uneven, and it may limit door hinge functionality. Doors can rub against the wall or leave an inconsistent gap that ends up needing excessive caulking to hide.
We recommend using a matching 2″ wide filler on each side, as shown below, to ensure proper fit, clean alignment, and full door operation.
