Hello,
I was looking at purchasing a 2 door base cabinet (B2D) and butting it right up against a wall. I attached a quick sketch of the idea. When the doors open, will the door open beyond the width of the cabinet itself? I am particularly concerned with the part of the door that is closest to the wall when the door is shut. I want to maximize the size of the cabinets but I don’t want to gouge the wall every time it’s opened. Follow up question: if I choose pull out shelves, will they be able to open with a wall blocking the door from opening entirely?

Yes, you really do need some sort of spacer where the cabinets meet the wall. This helps prevent issues with the doors not opening to the full 90 degrees, and frankly, it just looks cleaner. A standard 2″ filler strip is typically used to tie the cabinets into the wall. If you have pullout shelves installed, it’s especially important that the door opens to a full 90 degrees—or just under—since there’s a spacer block that keeps the edge of the rollout clear of the hinges.
