Running into issues which is exactly why I did a test order before buying my entire kitchen.

Background: I have old face frame cabinets from who knows when. Boxes seem fine, so I figure let’s just upgrade the doors.

My goal was to get as close to a full overlay look as possible using my existing cabinet boxes.

Here are the steps I took.

Step 1: Raw Wall Cabinet Measurements:

        Dimensions Measurement
        Cabinet box width 24″
Cabinet box height (Not including the odd trim piece the top of my box has since it protrudes and door wouldn’t be able to close) 29 1/4″
        Face frame opening height 27″
Face frame stile width (each side) 1.5″
        Face frame opening width 21″
        Step 2: Overlay formula applied:

        Width: opening + 1″ each side = 21″ + 2″ = 23″

        Height: opening + 1″ top + 1″ bottom = 27″ + 2″ = 29″

The problem: My test door arrived and on the hinge side there’s a 1″ gap showing the face frame. Meaning the opposite sits flush with my cabinet width. Height is correct.

What I’m trying to figure out: Is this a cup hole drilling issue (Barker pre-drilled the hinge cups), a measuring mistake on my end, or something about how full overlay works on face frame cabinets that I’m missing?

Using the Blum B38N 1/2″ overlay COMPACT soft-close hinges. Mounting plate is correctly positioned on the interior stile edge.

Photo attached. Any help appreciated before I place the 17-piece order.

Do I need a different hinge? Perhaps, the 71B3550 Clip top BLUMOTION 110 Degree Hinge Full Overlay one?k

You are fine. The doors are measured correctly, and the hinge cup drilling is universal, it does not change based on which hinge is used or selected. Only the hinges themselves change to accommodate different overlay sizes.

You need the 1” overlay hinges. The hinges you are showing are only 1/2” overlay, which is the more common default hinge.

For a full-overlay reface, you will need to change the hinges to accommodate a larger door overlay. In your situation, go with the 1” overlay hinge to properly cover the 1” gap, as shown.
