Hello,
Scoured the forum but not seeing this posted, my apologies if a redundant question.Planning on kitchen remodel and current framed cabinets all in great condition. I would like to add uppers and 3 drawer bases within the design.
1. If i order new full overlay doors and hinges for old cabinets will i obtain a seamless look with incorporated new frameless cabinets installed side by side?
2. Would like to veneer kitchen island cabinet frames, then order new doors. Should the finished ends be ordered same width as if frameless? 24 5/8
3. Wanting to use rubio monocoat to achieve very natural white oak finish, will i run i to problems matching veneers to doors?
Thank you

Sure, let’s dig in:
1. Door Reveals, Hinges, and Cabinet Compatibility
When you order frameless cabinets from any of our cabinet lines, including City Cabinets, Barker Cabinets, or Barker Modern, they are built as true full overlay frameless systems with very tight reveals. When installed correctly, the door gaps will fall in the 1/16″ to 1/8″ range.
These tight reveals are possible because we use Blum Blumotion straight arm hinges, which allow the face of the frameless cabinet case to be almost completely covered at just over 5/8″ of overlay.
Technically, we do not size our doors by overlay. We design for a 1/16″ reveal from the edge of the door to the cabinet case, then select the appropriate hinge that achieves that geometry. Our standard straight arm Blum hinges offer extensive adjustment, which allows us to maintain these tight tolerances.
On BarkerDoor.com we sell Blum Compact hinges. These are designed to create full overlay doors on face frame cabinets that were not originally built for full overlay. They are excellent hinges, but they do not allow the same tight tolerances as our frameless cabinet hinges.
Compact hinges typically require a little over 1/4″ of gap between doors to operate without rubbing. That is nearly double the reveal of our cabinet lines.
You cannot use our straight arm hinges to convert a face frame cabinet to full overlay. Those hinges only allow a maximum overlay of just over 5/8″, which works on frameless boxes but not on face frame cabinets.
So to answer your question, it will not be a seamless visual transition from a face frame cabinet with full overlay doors to our frameless cabinets with tighter reveals if your goal is for the reveals to align perfectly.
To do this correctly, it would require constructing a matching face frame box, then adding our doors with the full overlay hinges like the cabinet shown in the example.
2. Island Applications and Finished End Panels
It sounds like you plan to veneer the existing face frames on your island. That is the correct approach.
You can apply a new finished end panel, but our end panels are 3/4″ thick, which will increase the length of the cabinet run by 3/4″.
This will affect the countertop overhang and drip edge alignment and is not recommended unless you are replacing the countertops.
Most customers instead veneer the exposed edges and cabinet sides of islands or peninsulas to visually match the new doors without changing cabinet dimensions.
3. Clearcoats and Finishing
I do not have personal experience with Monocoat, but there are many excellent clearcoat systems available.
The quality of the finish will be determined largely by your spray equipment and application technique.
Even a basic Harbor Freight spray gun can produce excellent results when paired with a high quality product like Sherwin Williams Gallery clearcoat in a 20 sheen, which is our recommendation.
Wipe on finishes are also an option, but they are more difficult to apply evenly and generally do not achieve the same professional look as a sprayed finish in my opinion.
