Sure, see the side view here. Note that you can cut into the rail to free up space and bring the cooktop unit forward. The rail is there to help keep the cabinet square and provide some support for the countertop.
Some countertop installers may add additional bracing if the stone is not strong enough to span that area, but that is typically determined by the installer on site.
