I plan on ordering cabinets with the Shaker Inset Panel but would like all of the drawers to have slab fronts (not just the top one). Would I just order all of the drawer bases as slab instead of the shaker?

I found the answer to this question. Have you ever considered adding a keyword search feature for the forums? Just a thought. 🙂

Normally, we do not offer a solid wood slab option for the lower drawer fronts on drawer base cabinets, such as the three- and four-drawer bases shown on our website. The reason is that solid wood slabs require glue-ups, and when those glue-ups become very wide or tall, they can warp, bow, or separate over time. Glue-ups are necessary because the end grain direction must alternate with each board to prevent cupping.

Please do not select the slab plywood option for this application. Those fronts use a plywood substrate with a veneer on the face and back, which results in a slightly different grain appearance. They also use a vertical grain orientation, whereas the top drawer front and frame-and-panel doors use a horizontal grain. Placing slab plywood fronts next to frame-and-panel doors will not look correct.

I will go ahead and add an option on CityCabinets.com to allow solid wood drawer fronts for the lower drawers. The height of these lower drawer fronts is only marginally larger than our standard 10-inch maximum for solid slabs, so I do not see any significant issues, especially since these slabs will be anchored to the flat surface of the drawer boxes. In the unlikely event of movement, an additional screw may be required, but this should be rare.

Please give me a day or so to add this option to the website. If you would like to place the order before then, simply add an order note at checkout requesting that the lower drawer fronts on the drawer base cabinet be changed to solid wood slabs, and note that this change was approved by Chad Barker via the forums. We will take care of the rest.

    Thanks!

Ok, this option to change over to solid lower slab fronts has been added to the website under the “Top drawer and false fronts” drop down. See here:

Thank you for that explanation. It isn’t at all what I thought. I will give it some thought before making a final decision.
