Shaker doors and B3DR/B2DR with slab fronts
My design includes using Shaker doors for wall cabinets and for some of the base cabinets – B45 and Sink. Rest of the base cabinets are B3DR or B2DR. I had configured the drawers fronts as , and
B2DR : Door and Drawer Front Style = Slab Plywood
B3DR : Door and Drawer Front Style = Slab Plywood; Top Drawer and False Fronts = Slab/Flat (outside edge detail matches door style)The drawer cabinets abut B45 on either side or one side in case of the sink cabinet. The shaker doors on B45 and Sink cabinet would have thickness of 13/16 in while the plywood fronts of the drawers would 3/4 in.
1) Is it okay to combine flat fronts on drawer cabinets and shaker doors for base and wall cabinets ?
2) Would different thicknesses of the drawer fronts (slab plywood) and doors (shaker) cause any issues while opening the doors ?
3) Would the different thicknesses look odd?
4) Would you instead recommend using solid wood slab drawer front fronts instead ?
5) Do you have any pictures that show all drawer fronts being flat and shaker for doors with the wood grain visible instead of being painted?Thank you.

No, I would not mix slab plywood doors with shaker doors in the same area. What we’ve done instead is add an option for drawer base cabinets. You can now order the cabinet in a shaker style, and under the “Top Drawer and False Fronts” dropdown, select “Solid Wood Slab / Flat Lower Fronts.”
This keeps the drawer fronts at the same 13/16″ thickness as the surrounding shaker door frames, maintains the correct horizontal grain direction (slab ply is vertical), and matches the same lumber and outside edge details as the shaker doors. This is exactly why we recently added this option to citycabinets.com.
I don’t have photos of this yet since it was just added, and we had actually prohibited ordering lower fronts this way for the past 20 years. That said, it should look great. Note that we used to do this back in the early 2000s with no aesthetic issues.
The only reason we discontinued it previously was because solid wood slab fronts can wrap or twist at larger heights. In this case, since they are mounted to a drawer box, the box front keeps everything stable, so it’s not a concern.

I have selected “SOLID WOOD SLAB / FLAT LOWER FRONTS option for Top Drawer/False Fronts” for the B3DR units in my design. I have one B2DR as well. I don’t see the same option for B2DR fronts. Is it possible to make this selection for B2DR?

You would need to request that modification in the order notes at checkout.
Two-drawer cabinets can end up with fairly tall drawer fronts, so this is not typically recommended. Taller solid wood slab fronts are more prone to cupping or warping over time, even with a drawer box acting as a backer.
That said, if you are comfortable with that risk, we can swap those fronts to solid slabs. Just include the request in your order notes at checkout.
