We have room for a large cabinet pantry/larder between the refrigerator and the wall and plan put one atop two 21″ B3DRs with a countertop (44″ total width available but leaving 2″ against the wall). I originally planned to place a single 54″h x 42″w x 18″d W2DAPPLIANCEGARAGE on the counter (with a 14x42x18 W2DR on top to reach the 108″ ceiling and match the rest of the run), but worried the huge 54×42 cabinet would face sagging shelves.

We’re fine with splitting it into two separate 21″w cabinets (to minimise sagging) but would still appreciate a single full width shelf sitting on top of the counter to accommodate a small 20″ wide microwave. I was thinking about stacking a 16″h x 42″w x 18″d W2DAPPLIANCEGARAGE under 2 38″h x 21″w W2DR cabinets (plus the 14″h cabinets above, but would this weight overwhelm and cause sagging to the 16″x42″ appliance garage cabinet at the bottom? If so, do you have any alternate recommendations?

A 42″ two-door wall cabinet is fairly wide, so shelf sag could be a possibility. I would go with the wide appliace garage below and then stack two wall cabinet on top.

In your layout, the wider appliance garage cabinet is below two upper cabinets. The center doubled up partitions between the upper cabinets will prevent sagging. The upper cabinets will be screwed together first, installed as one unit on top of the appliance garage, and then secured through the appliance garage top into the cabinets above. With the strength of the plywood and the added support, sagging should not be a concern for the cabinet cases here. A 42″ two-door wall cabinet is fairly wide, so shelf sag may be a concern. I recommend using the wider appliance garage below with two separate wall cabinets stacked on top.

The doubled center partitions between the upper cabinets will provide additional support. The upper cabinets will be fastened together, installed as one unit, and secured through the appliance garage top. With the plywood construction and added center support, cabinet-case sag should not be a concern.

Thank you so much for confirming the 42″ appliance garage would not be at risk for sagging under the stacked tall cabinets above.
