  • Height of rails on BEXPOSEDWIDERAILS

Posted by Jim on August 1, 2026 at 2:32 pm

I am putting a bookshelf on the backside of my kitchen island and am trying to pick the cabinet that would look the best. Either a BEXPOSED with a flush toekick or BEXPOSEDWIDERAILS dropped to the floor. I think the second option will look cleaner, but the dimensions of the wider rails are not noted in the description. If they are wide enough, I plan on using them without a toekick. For the choice I make, the cabinets will be primed and painted, so if I do end up getting the BEXPOSED, should I also install the toeskin prior to painting, or will that stickout the 1/4″ from the face of the cabinet.

    Thanks

Sure. The wide rails on that cabinet are 2″ tall/wide. If you are using this cabinet on the back side of an island, you will likely want to order it with a flush toe kick and then apply a piece of base molding over the face of the toe kick.

The base molding will hide some of the seams, including the seam between the lower rail and the face of the flush toe kick. Without base molding, that seam may look a little unfinished or out of place. I have included a few photos showing the rail sizes and where the seams will be located.

The BEXPOSED option will also work, but it does not include the wide rails that create the appearance of a substantial face frame. This is mostly a design preference, but I would personally use the wide-rail version because it provides a more traditional and finished appearance.

I would avoid using toe skin in this application. Base molding is solid wood and has a finished top edge, while toe-kick skin does not have a finished top edge and would need to be covered.

For an island, the best approach is to use base molding, with the optional addition of base shoe molding to further tie the island into the flooring.
