  • Edge Banding Painting Recommendation

    Hello,

We are interested in ordering cabinets in the unfinished premium maple – & will have the doors & drawer fronts custom painted or stained by a local painter.

My question is about the edge banding on the cabinet body. We were planning on just sending the doors and drawer fronts to the painter, but I see that the edge banding on the website images has the same treatment as the doors. I am wondering if this will be visible at all and if we need to have this painted or stained as well?

    Thanks!

Correct. The face of the cabinet case should always align with the face of the cabinet doors. This is standard practice in the cabinetry industry.

Most people who plan to spray their cabinets on site, or have a local painter do the finishing, will simply wipe on or use a small brush to apply primer and paint to the exposed case edges as needed. Spraying the faces will produce the best finish quality since it creates a smoother surface. However, the exposed area is only about 3/4″ wide, so even a fairly rough brush application of primer and paint will usually look acceptable.

If spraying is used, the cabinet faces will need to be carefully taped and masked to prevent overspray. This masking and preparation work is typically the most time-consuming and costly part of the process. While spraying will look nicer, those areas will ultimately be covered by the cabinet doors once they are installed, so it is usually not worth hiring a professional just for that portion.

The cabinet doors, on the other hand, are absolutely worth having professionally sprayed. They are the most visible part of the cabinetry and will be seen and handled daily, so finish quality and durability matter much more there.
