Hello – we have ordered door samples and are quite interested in Barker Cabs services and have found that your product should work for pretty much everything we are looking to do.

One area that we are looking for more clarification or ideas on, is the range hood surround.
I have watched the video for the surround and understand how it is sized.

What we are looking for are some ways to possibly dress it up a little. We would tie the top into the same elevation as the adjacent wall cabs, and would add crown. We are looking at ways to dress up the bottom.
I have seen the gallery photo for the Murphy project, and looks like that might be the Barker surround, with some sort of molding on the bottom?
Does anyone have any other photos or concepts of ways to dress it up a little?

        Thanks!

It appears they added a custom molding or skirt box to the bottom of the hood surround. From the looks of it, the project was built around 2017. Although the picture is somewhat grainy, it seems the customer stacked the hood enclosure cabinet on top of a custom-built, approximately 6-inch-tall box. This adds some detail but would require cutting and assembling the box on site. To replicate this, I would order extra shaker or the Portland base molding and miter it on site to fit the design.

Thanks – are there any other interesting things people have done for that surround?

People often use that space as a focal point, going all out since it’s at eye level. The impact really depends on your level of ornamentation—it can either make the area pop or become an eyesore. Personally, I appreciate all styles, but a clean, transitional design aesthetic works well in most cases.

I’ve seen a variety of approaches, including custom-made copper hood enclosures, designs supported by large, chunky corbels, and more streamlined oversized enclosures that give the impression of being seamlessly framed. Here are a few examples that come to mind.

If you plan to incorporate some corbels, See Osbourne Wood product. I have used them in the past for various projects with good results. https://www.osbornewood.com/

We also sell various moldings by themselves that allow you to build and customize the hood enclosure to your liking: https://www.citycabinets.com/Advanced-Crown-Selection-s/205.htm

Also, this is a very old kitchen we did back in 2005, but I always enjoyed the sheer massiveness of this hood. A bit over the top, but it still hold up today.

Ah – i think i figured out the confusion from that diagram.
The WHOODENC label on the left might be mislabled? I am guessing it is MOBC-BM5-4 and the other pieces (MCAP and MPORTLANDBUILDUP) are affixed to that?

I really like that last example you showed.

That looks to be a package of moldings stacked … do you happen to have a schematic of how that was built up and attached to the WHOODENC?
I took a look at the MPORTLANDBUILDUP profile and it doesn’t appear to have the same look as in that example (maybe an older deprecated profile?).

I will post a side profile with dimensions on Monday. The pic I posted earlier was vague and now that I’m looking at it, needs to be adjusted.

Basically, you’d need to rip down the width to 2.25” wide (ours comes wider than that) on that Portland build up. Then use a Cap molding on the top and bottom to dress it up a bit. I’ll show this in a picture so it makes sense. This hood area is a fun little focal point that you can really get creative with. I put the range on the island in my home, but I have always loved that sort of cozy vibe that is instilled when it’s installed on the wall. You can do a lot of creative stuff by combining tile and woodworking trades here.

See here for a better side view with some dimensions.

The lower portion is only 6″ tall, so instead of ordering a full separate hood enclosure cabinet with a blank front at 6″ tall, it would be more cost effective to simply order some sticks of 6″ tall base molding and miter them on site to suit the lower box portion of this fancy hood enclosure. Your moldings that are applied to the top and bottom will stiffen it up quite a bit as well.

I took a look at the base molding, and it seems to be an option at only 4″ tall. (MOBC-BM5-4)
Would we need to use the flat light valance molding, which can be ordered in different thickness? (MOBCFLAT-UCL)

The UCL would work, but it has a backer piece attached which could cause issues. Only our CityCabinets.com line has 6″ tall base molding currently. I will change this in the future. For now, this might be better: https://www.barkercabinets.com/product-p/mrail.htm
