Are there some better pictures or identify a gallery that has walnut with clearcoat, walnut with chestnut, and/or all the other finish options. The small samples on the “finishes” page is hard to tell what it actually looks like on a cabinet/door. I think it would be a great idea to include a picture of a cabinet door with the same finish on the the specific finish page that you select. That would be helpful to potential clients.

Pictures of walnut with a clear coat versus a chestnut stain will look almost identical. The stain color is very similar to natural walnut, so it doesn’t significantly change the appearance—aside from slightly evening out the color variations between different walnut slices used in the door frame and panels. See [attached image] for a side-by-side comparison of walnut with the three coats we offer.
Regarding pictures of past projects, the chestnut stain is relatively new, having been added within the last few months. Personally, I prefer the chestnut stain because it doesn’t have the red undertones of our Tamarack stain. It also minimizes color variation for a more consistent look.
If you’d like to see a full door finished with the chestnut stain, you can order a single test door at barkerdoor.com. Another option is to order a custom sample door from Barker Cabinets here:

Thank you for the pics!
I received a bunch of samples and it’s really hard to choose a favorite!
Would you mind attaching a picture of the full door of my top choices below?
Cherry – chestnut
Cherry – clearcoat
Alder – chestnut
Walnut – clearcoat
Walnut – chestnutI plan to order a sample door when I narrow down my choice more than what it currently is.

Sure! See the attached samples for cherry and alder. I don’t have a walnut door sample because the Clear, Chestnut, and Tamarack stains look nearly identical on walnut since it’s already so dark. The stain doesn’t make much of a difference. For walnut, I recommend the Chestnut stain, as it helps even out grain color variations.

Hi Chad, I really appreciate your posts. Do you have any other aged door samples that you could post? I understand that you have UV protection on your boxes, but not necessarily your fronts? Do you think that clear-coat or stained finishes between your Barker and City Cabinets lines would age differently? With the chestnut stain being so new, do you have any idea how different woods will age with the chestnut stain? Thanks a bunch!

The cabinet interiors have a UV-cured, baked-on finish. However, this does not provide long-term protection against UV exposure. Even if a UV-shielded finish were used, it would only slow down the aging process—not prevent it. Ultimately, the results would be the same over time.
Applying a stain to the wood can help maintain a more consistent color as it ages. Cherry is by far the most UV-sensitive wood we offer. The clearcoat used across different product lines will age in the same way.
Chestnut is a newer option, and we currently only have new samples available in the showroom, so we don’t yet have an aged comparison to share. That said, it should behave similarly to Tamarack, though Chestnut lacks the red undertones found in Tamarack’s stain.
Here are a few pics I have on hand of the aging of various materials.

Thank you so much! I love the natural wood and it is fun to see how it ages. These pictures will definitely help me plan my countertops and floors!
