I have 8′ ceilings. I’d like to have 9″ build up of crown molding without a large horizontal component. Would you recommend this flat buildup with a large custom flat piece?

Yes, you can go up to 6″ tall with the custom version of the flat crown shown at that link. That option works well up to a 6″ height. We can go larger if needed, but anything beyond 6″ would be considered a custom request and may incur additional fees, as wider crown pieces are more difficult to package and ship.

If you would like a 9″ tall crown, you can request this in the order notes at checkout. We will then email you with the pricing for the height upgrade for approval before the order is started.

If I were to order the flat crown and also the 3.5″ tall Portland build-up molding and wanted the whole measurement to be 9″, what other pieces or what size flat crown would you suggest? Thank you!

In this case, I would recommend ordering an 8″ tall flat crown. This leaves approximately a 1″ air gap between the top of the crown molding and the underside of the ceiling. That gap makes installation easier and will be fully concealed once the additional molding is applied to the face.

The Portland build-up molding is 3.5″ tall and can be ordered separately from the link below. Install the 8″ flat crown first, then pin-nail the Portland molding to the face of that backer, and you’ll be all set.
