Bookcases are typically created using the exposed wall, base, and tall cabinets listed in each category. You can combine these with regular base, wall, and tall cabinets that have doors, glass doors, or fully open fronts to create bookcase style storage.

The layout concept is the same as any standard cabinet design. You can stack wall cabinets on top of base or tall cabinets to create endless combinations of exposed or bookcase configurations.

We do not offer full floor to ceiling bookcases as a single standalone unit. Units at that size are difficult to ship and even more difficult to install properly.

I can elaborate further if needed, but the main issue is installation logistics. If you assemble a full height unit on site, you often cannot stand it upright in the room due to ceiling height limitations. For that reason, we design systems using multiple stacked units. This makes shipping, handling, and on site installation much more manageable and practical.

Exposed cabinets are built the same way as standard cabinets with doors. They still require finished panels, fillers, and other trim components just like a normal cabinet run. Even though the exterior matches the finished interior, the construction holes are still visible, so a finished end panel is still required where needed.

I am deciding between City and Barker. On city there is an open bottom bookcase so it will rest on countertop above one door cabinet below. I don’t see where to order that on Barker. Measurements of just bookcase part are 56.5 high x 12 deep x 29 wide. It will sit on one door base cabinet. I just don’t see similar item on Barker. I only see one with a base. Not sure if I am explaining this clearly but the bookcase will not be sitting on the floor. Thank you again.

On CityCabinets.com, we run that site as more of an experimental platform. We tend to add products there more quickly and with less hesitation than on Barker. Think of it as a sort of R&D line where a customer may request something that may or may not work perfectly in every situation. We will sometimes add it anyway, along with disclaimers explaining why it might not always be the best option. It helps us test ideas and gather real-world feedback.

The bookcase cabinet you are looking at is one of those examples. The issue with that cabinet is that it can be ordered very tall and it does not have a bottom deck tying the lower portion together. Because of that, the 1/4″ back panel can actually slide out during installation and only becomes fully locked in once the cabinet is sitting on the countertop.

That said, it was added a few months ago for another customer and we have not had any complaints so far. The main concern is that if the cabinet is installed even slightly out of square or plumb, the shelves may not sit properly. If the left and right sides are off even a little, the shelves could become unstable and potentially fall out or cause interior damage when weight is added.

It is not a major issue as long as the installer takes the time to make sure the cabinet is installed square and plumb. However, it is definitely a more advanced installation cabinet. That is why we have not added it to Barker yet, as it is still somewhat in a “beta testing” phase.

If you would prefer to order it through Barker, just let me know and I can add it there. Just be aware that it is still essentially in beta testing.

Thank you very much for the detailed answer and I understand. I would prefer the Barker line and I am going to talk to my installer about the issue. Ordering finish samples today.

Hi Chad – I placed the Barker order today. I forgot that I was supposed to ask you to add the exposed wall cabinets to Barker. I just put the request in the notes. Would you please add the item to Barker and then I will change my order if that is how this should be handled? My order number is 57323 and it has been put on temporary hold.

                  Thank you again.
