I was looking at your city cabinets line and I want Eurostyle flat panel slab doors in rift oak. I don’t see that option in your City cabinet line. I also would love to see examples of different stains on the rift oak but I see no pictures. Where would I see that or examples of kitchens in that door style in Rift oak? Is that option available in your city cabinet line?

City offers a door style called “Slab Plywood” in the drop-down menu of selectable door styles. This is a simple ¾” thick plywood door with real wood edge banding in the species of your choice.

We don’t have full kitchen examples to show, but we do have white oak rift samples in our showroom. Below are pictures of each sample placed side by side for color comparison. You’re also welcome to order a sample through this link so you can view it in the lighting of your project.

Thank you so much for that. I think I will order some of the samples, but is there anyway you have any pictures of finished kitchens or cabinets in place that I could see the different finishes on the rift oak. The sample samples are wonderful, but it’s hard to imagine a whole kitchen done with it. It’s nice to have some pictures.
            Thank you,
            Linda Ingraham

Currently, I don’t have photos of a full kitchen completed in the Rift White Oak slab door style. We’ve sold quite a few kitchens in this look but have not yet received installation pictures from customers. Rift White Oak (used here as a substitute for quarter-sawn) was only added back in late 2023, so it’s still relatively new.

I did check our shipping dock and found a current project in production that’s about to ship. This one features a Chestnut stain over the White Oak veneer, which is a bit darker than the standard clearcoat. You can see the clean, uniform rift grain pattern that gives it such a streamlined look.

                Hi Chad,

I am after a natural wood finish on slab doors. I’ve taken note of the warnings regarding grain matching and consistency for these doors, and am not interested in the laminate Modern line, so had a couple of questions to best know how to proceed:

                1. Do you have any photos of the maple across multiple slab doors so we can get an idea of the possible variation that may occur for this wood type?

                2. If we decide that grain matching across the doors is important, is it possible to purchase the cabinet bases without doors or drawer fronts, but still include all relevant hardware? I don’t see this option when adding items to my cart.

                3. Alternatively, is it possible to purchase the plywood slab doors unfinished, so we could apply the veneer locally to our specifications?

Any guidance would be great! Thanks!

                  1. Slab Maple Door Photos
At the moment, we don’t have any slab maple doors in production that I can photograph and send over. I’ll keep an eye out, and if I see any being sprayed, I’ll be happy to grab a few photos and pass them along.

That said, maple is generally very consistent in both color and grain. We tend to see far more variation and tone mismatch issues with cherry, sapele, and walnut slab doors, as those species can vary significantly from sheet to sheet. Alder, maple, and both red and white oak are typically very consistent and rarely present those issues.

                  2. Cabinets Without Doors
Unfortunately, we’re not able to offer cabinets without doors for several reasons:

Our system is designed to sell cabinets and doors as an integrated unit. The programming requires the doors to be present in order to correctly place hinge cups and mounting plates during CNC machining. Removing the doors would also remove those drilling operations.

Door sizing is extremely critical to proper function. We run a very tight reveal of approximately 1/8″ once cabinets are installed. Even small sizing deviations can cause rubbing, clearance problems, and ultimately require remakes.

Our cabinets are priced and sold as a complete package. Because of that group-purchase structure, we’re not able to separate or back out the cost of the doors independently.

                  3. Raw Maple Doors / Veneering
You can absolutely purchase the maple doors in raw wood if you’d like, although in most cases that isn’t necessary. Applying veneer over a plywood door would be quite labor-intensive and likely not worth the effort, in my opinion.

Also note that we’re not able to sell doors without the veneer already applied to the plywood substrate. We don’t stock that type of plywood; the veneer is laid up at the mill as part of the panel manufacturing process.

                      Thanks for the reply!

One further question: the slab door style is not available to purchase as sample on the City Cabinets website. If I purchase the door sample via the Barker Cabinets website, will it be the same?

                      Thanks again.

Yes, doors sold on Barker Cabinets and City Cabinets are exactly the same.

Hello – I had another question as I remember reading something about maximum height for slab doors to maintain a single sheet of veneer but I can’t seem to find the info again.

For tall base cabinets with slab doors – is there a maximum height to keep a single sheet of veneer as the face? Would prefer not to have the veneer break midway through the door. Would this also apply to finished end pieces?

                        Thanks in advance!

We previously had a disclaimer on barkerdoor.com from when we allowed customers to order solid wood slab doors over 10 inches wide and tall. If you order a solid wood slab door up to 24 inches wide and very tall, such as 48 inches, the wood can warp or twist over time due to humidity fluctuations. That disclaimer was in place to help steer customers toward more stable options, such as frame and panel doors or slab plywood doors, which will not break down over time.

Only paneled five piece doors, such as Shaker or Windsor, will receive a second or third panel as the door height increases. If you are ordering slab plywood doors, there is no need to worry about additional panels. The slab plywood material is already stable and does not need to be broken up to prevent stability issues.
