I am needing to put an order in to purchase doors for our kitchen. We have already ordered the kitchen cabinets from the city site and are awaiting for them to come in. On our order we have some open upper wall cabinets that do not include doors on that we are going to purchase doors separately in order to give the cabinets a stacked cabinet look by making each cabinet have double doors; top smaller, bottom larger. The question we have is in terms of sizing the doors appropriately to match the remaining cabinets we ordered for the kitchen. The Barker Door website mentions to just basically add a half inch to each size of the openings of the cabinet, thus the exposed portion of the cabinet would be ¼ inch on each side. However, assuming the City website builds the cabinets the same as the Barker website, the barker website mentions the cabinet reveals on the top and bottom of the cabinet is ⅛”, and 1/16″ on each of the sides and middle sections between doors. Can you advise on the best means of calculating door sizes to match your City Website’s reveals.

Cabinets from BarkerCabinets.com and CityCabinets.com use the exact same construction method. The image you added applies to both Barker Cabinets and City Cabinets.

Both lines use a full overlay door on a frameless cabinet case. There is no face frame. Instead, we use a very rigid 3/4″ thick plywood cabinet case, with the doors fully covering the edge banded cabinet face.

BarkerDoor.com follows refacing standards, and the tutorials on that site use a completely different method for determining door sizes compared to BarkerCabinets.com and CityCabinets.com. Do not use that tutorial for sizing doors on our cabinet cases, it will not work.

The best way to determine door sizes that will match the City line is to simply provide the overall cabinet width and height. From that information, I can show you exactly what size doors we would have manufactured, along with the correct hinges required when ordering through BarkerDoor.com.

Frameless cabinet door sizing is more precise because we work with metric reveals and combine those with hinge overlay to minimize spacing between doors, cabinet sides, and stacked cabinets. We target a 1/8″ gap, which is very tight and creates a clean, streamlined look. This avoids the clunky appearance caused by wider reveals used by other suppliers. Achieving this requires tighter tolerances and more precise manufacturing equipment.

As a starting point, please provide an example cabinet size you would like to add a door to, and we can generate a sizing formula based on that example. Also, can you clarify why the cabinets were not originally ordered with doors included?

Thanks for getting back. In terms of why we didn’t originally order the cabinets with doors, we were wanting to have stacked cabinets for our wall cabinets. However, as opposed to ordering two separate cabinets, which we would have cost more over the long haul, we were content with having one cabinet unit with two stacked doors. While setting one of the shelves in between the door (and possibly adding a bit of trim to make it flush with the unfinished cabinet) it would allow us a similar look. Unfortunately, the units sold do not offer that as an option so we were piecing that together as suggested from a designer we had been working with prior to deciding to order from you. Hope that makes sense.

An example of one of the open cabinets we had ordered: 42″ tall x 30″ wide. This obviously would be a double side by side style door but the intended split for the 42″ height doors was a 28″ door and a 14″ door. Thanks

Sure, see below for a 42″ tall cabinet with two sets of doors as described. This is how our system would handle the door heights if such a cabinet were offered:
